It’s Flag Day! Celebrate, and Check Out Some Flags Just as Cool as Ours

Today is Flag Day. Shout out to the American Flag for being the best of the bunch back in 1777: Since that time you’ve inspired countless heroes, movements, and Kid Rock songs. To celebrate this glorious flag and other inspiring flags like it, we feel it’s our duty as cool flag makers ourselves to curate all the world’s flags and pay them a little homage.

But first: a lil’ background about flags

Did you know that someone who studies flags is called a Vexillologists? Well, now you know. In

addition to vexillologists, there is also a group of flag enthusiasts called the North American Vexillological Association, and they have five rules for what makes a good flag:

1. Keep it simple
2. Use meaningful symbolism
3. Use two to three basic colors
4. No lettering or seals of any kind.
5. Be distinctive

Not all flags follow this formula—ours sure doesn’t. But just because a flag doesn’t follow these rules doesn’t mean it can’t be cool. So here are some great flags you may not have ever heard of.

Isle of Man Flag
Who knew that ancient Mycenaeans had fidget spinners.

Turkmenistan
Is it simple? No. Is it awesome? Yes

Benin Empire
Even though this flag isn’t in use anymore it still deserves a mention because it is incredibly violent. It’s like if Quentin Tarrantino designed a flag.

Texas
Obviously, love the Texas flag, but we may be biased.

Drumheller Alberta, Canada
Finally, how can we forget our Canadian friends? This flag is amazing for one reason: it has a dinosaur on it.
